Everyone wants their S15 lower, and most of the coilover advice floating around treats ride height like the only decision that matters. It isn’t. Get the spring rate, the damper valving and the travel wrong and you end up with a car that rides like a brick, wears its tyres out and hands a warrant inspector an easy fail. Here is how to choose coilovers that actually work on New Zealand roads and pass a WOF without a fight.

Spring Rates The S15 Actually Wants

Reading The Numbers Before You Buy

Nearly every coilover kit sold for the S15 quotes spring rates in kg/mm, but plenty of the imported paperwork still uses lb/in. The conversion is simple: one kg/mm is roughly 56 lb/in. Stock sits around 2.3kg front and 2.0kg rear, which tells you how far most kits jump.

For a street car we keep landing on 7kg front and 5kg rear as a sensible starting point. The multilink rear does not need to match the front, and running the rear too stiff makes the back end skittish over mid-corner bumps.

The number on the box is only half the story. A 7kg spring on a well-valved damper rides better than a 5kg spring on a damper that has no idea what to do with it. Buy the rate for your use, then make sure the damper underneath can control it.

Progressive Versus Linear On Rough Roads

Linear springs give the same rate through their whole stroke, which is what you want on a track where the surface is predictable. Progressive springs start soft and firm up as they compress, soaking up small stuff before the rate climbs.

On a smooth circuit, linear wins. On a typical NZ backroad of chipseal, frost heave and patched potholes, that soft initial rate earns its keep. The car stays composed over the small hits instead of firing every ripple into the chassis.

Most quality S15 coilovers ship linear because that is what the enthusiast market asks for. If you daily the car on rough roads and only see the track occasionally, do not feel bad about running a slightly softer linear rate than the forums insist on.

Matching Rates To How You Drive

The honest question is how the car actually gets used, not how you imagine it being used. One that does the odd track day but spends the week on the motorway wants a different rate to one that lives at Ruapuna most weekends.

Stiffer springs put more tyre on the road under hard cornering and cut body roll, and that is genuinely faster on smooth tarmac. The cost is ride quality and, on broken surfaces, less mechanical grip as the tyre skips over bumps instead of following them.

For a road-biased S15 we would rather run a slightly softer rate that keeps the tyre planted on real roads than chase a circuit number that pays off twice a year. Start where the car is livable and let the driving tell you what it needs.

Cheap Coilovers Versus Real Dampers

There is a wall of coilover kits on TradeMe under about 800 dollars, and on paper they look identical to units costing three times that. The springs are usually fine. The dampers are where the money went, or did not.

A budget damper is often a generic monotube valved for an average of everything, which means it is right for nothing. Bolt it under a stiff spring and it either blows through its travel or crashes over sharp edges, and it fades and weeps oil far sooner.

Not every cheap kit is rubbish; some are honest budget gear that rides fine with modest rates. But if you are running proper rates on an S15 you actually enjoy driving, the damper is the part worth spending on. It does the real work every metre of road.

Adjustable Damping Explained

Damping adjustment controls how fast the suspension is allowed to move, not how firm the spring is. People mix those up constantly. Turning the clicker does nothing to your spring rate; it changes how the damper resists compression and rebound.

Cheaper adjustable coilovers give you one knob that alters compression and rebound together. Better units split them, so you can dial compression for bump absorption separately from rebound for how the car settles. A 32-way adjuster sounds impressive, but you will use a narrow band in the middle of that range.

For a street S15, start soft, about a third up from full soft, and only firm up if the car feels floaty. Firmer is not better. Past a point you are just making the car harsh without adding real control.

The Rebound Bounce Nobody Talks About

Here is the fault that catches people out. Set the rebound too soft and the car floats after a bump, the nose rising and falling like a boat once over an undulation. Fine in a straight line at low speed, then genuinely unsettling over rolling crests taken with any pace.

The tell is a second, uncommanded movement after the initial hit. Push down hard on a guard and let go; a well-damped corner returns to rest in one controlled motion and stops. If it bounces back past level and settles over two or three cycles, the rebound is too soft or the damper is worn.

In the extreme this is a warrant problem, because a damper that cannot control body movement is a safety fault. Most of the time it is a few clicks of rebound away from sorted. If clicks do not fix it, the damper itself is tired.

How Low Is Legal

There is no single legal ride height number, which surprises people who expect a millimetre figure to aim at. What the rules care about is that the vehicle is safe, the suspension works through its travel, and nothing fouls. Low ride height is assessed against those functional tests, not a fixed clearance.

In practice the limits come from geometry, not a tape measure. Drop the car far enough and the tyre contacts the guard, the suspension runs out of travel, or the exhaust and sump scrape driveways. Any of those is a fail, or soon will be.

The current checks are set out in the Waka Kotahi warrant of fitness requirements, which tell an inspector what to look at. The short version for an S15: low is fine until something stops working properly, and then it is not.

Guard Clearance And Tyre Rub

The classic lowered-S15 fault is the tyre kissing the guard lip on compression. It might sit clean in the driveway then rub hard the moment you load the outside wheel through a roundabout or hit a dip two-up. An inspector checks clearance through the suspension’s travel, not just at rest.

Wheel offset and tyre width feed straight into this. A wider tyre on a lower offset pushes the sidewall toward the guard, and adding negative camber to reclaim grip pulls the top of the tyre in but the bottom out. Rolling the guard lip buys clearance, but a rolled guard with cracked paint or sharp edges is its own fail.

Set it up so the tyre clears through full bump with the wheel turned. If you have to air the car over every speed bump to avoid the rub, it is too low or too wide, and an inspector will find the witness marks even if you do not.

Bump Stops Are Not Optional

The tempting shortcut is to wind the spring perch right down to get the car low, rather than dropping the whole assembly on its lower mount. That gets you the height but eats your suspension travel, and it is the wrong way to lower a coilover-equipped S15.

Remove or hack down the bump stop and the suspension can bottom metal-to-metal. That is brutal on the damper, dangerous over a big hit because the wheel has nowhere to go, and a straightforward warrant fail if an inspector spots a missing or destroyed stop.

Lower the car by adjusting the lower mount to preserve stroke, keep a sensible bump stop even if you trim it slightly, and leave enough preload that the spring stays seated on full droop. Travel is what lets the tyre follow the road. Trade it all for height and you have built something that neither handles nor passes.

Alignment, Certification And Passing Inspection

Getting The Alignment Right After Lowering

Drop an S15 and the multilink geometry hands you a pile of negative camber and toe change whether you asked for it or not. The rear especially goes camber-happy, which wears the inner edge of a good set of tyres in a few thousand kilometres if you ignore it.

This is where adjustable arms earn their place. Rear traction and camber arms pull the camber back to something sensible, usually a degree or so of negative for a road car, and set toe near neutral. Front adjustable castor arms help too, and watching for bump steer once the tie rod angle changes is part of the job.

A proper corner alignment on lowered coilovers is money well spent, around 150 to 250 dollars in most NZ shops. Skip it and the car darts on white lines and eats tyres. It is the last step that makes the whole coilover exercise actually work.

When You Need LVVTA Certification

Coilovers themselves do not automatically need certification. If the kit bolts into the factory mounting points and the ride height sits within a normal adjustment range, quality coilovers on an S15 are generally treated as a component change, not a structural modification.

You cross into low-volume vehicle certification territory when you change the actual suspension structure. Modified strut towers, relocated mounting points, custom top mounts that alter geometry, or a height so extreme it falls outside the normal envelope all point toward a cert. The LVVTA technical guidance on suspension spells out where the line sits.

If you are unsure, ask a low-volume certifier before you build, not after. It is cheaper to check first than to unwind a setup a certifier or inspector knocks back. Most tidy coilover installs stay on the right side of the line, but the burden is on you to know where that line is.

What The Inspector Actually Looks At

A warrant suspension check is more thorough than most owners expect. The inspector goes over each corner looking for security first: are the coilovers mounted properly, are the locking collars done up, is anything loose or working its way undone.

Then condition and function. Leaking dampers fail, worn bushes and ball joints fail, and a damper that cannot control the car through that bounce test fails. They check tyre-to-guard clearance, look for rub witness marks, confirm the suspension has travel and is not sitting on the bump stops, and make sure nothing fouls when the wheels are turned.

None of this is out to get you. It is the same list a good build already gets right. Matched rates and dampers, a preserved bump stop, a real alignment and tidy secure mounts, and the warrant is a formality. The cars that fail are slammed to the perch with no travel and hoping nobody looks closely.

The slammed-to-the-perch look has a way of catching up with you, usually at the worst possible time on a rough road or under a warrant inspector’s torch. A well-sorted S15 on coilovers is quieter about it: right rates, a damper that controls them, travel left in the suspension, and a car that gets waved through inspection because there was never anything to find. That is the version worth building.

    The bump stop thing needs saying louder. Bought a car off someone who wound the perches all the way down and the ride was horrific, found the bump stops cut off when I pulled it apart. No wonder it crashed over everything.

    Good call on running the rear softer than the front. Ran mine matched at 7kg both ends for a while and the back was so nervous over mid corner bumps. Dropped the rear to 5 and it settled right down.

    Quick question on the cert side, if I’m on quality coilovers bolted to the factory mounts but sitting pretty low, is that a cert or not? Trying to work out if I need to book a certifier before my next warrant.

      As the article says it usually comes down to whether you’ve stayed in the normal adjustment range and haven’t touched the mounts. If it’s just low but the geometry is standard you’re generally fine, but honestly ring a low volume certifier and describe your setup. Five minutes on the phone beats a knockback.
